Iraq has signed a multi-billion dollar deal with oil and gas giant Royal Dutch Shell, giving the company access to its natural gas reserves. The deal is the second between the government and a foreign firm since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston reports that under the terms of the deal, Iraq will have 51 per cent in the venture based in Basra and Shell 49 per cent. UPDATE: Since this video was made Shell have confirmed that the contract does not include a production sharing agreement. |

Director Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Traffic) on conversing with Mr. Garfield on IFC's The Henry Rollins Show, about what he learned researching for Syriana. After being toured around the Middle East with the CIA's former Iraq Bureau Chief, Robert Baer, and meeting every large oil and arms dealer (as well as Hezbollah's spiritual leader, Sayyed Fadlullah), he reports that the arms and oil businesses are he same thing. When the world's energy supply is declining, your nation's consumption far outpaces the rest of the world, your entire national infrastructure is built upon the expectation of cheap abundant fossil fuel, and your foreign policy has excluded you from extracting oil from the world's potentially 2nd largest oil supply... what do you do? You initiate a war to reset the table. You country now has a seat at the table for that oil, and the nation you went to war with, now needs arms to protect itself from your mutual enemy (Iran.) Thankfully, a large portion of your economy is built upon arms exporting, and your new friends have plenty of the currency used to trade. It did cost your trillions of tax dollars to pull it off, and your 'friends' population could use that wealth.. but now, you got that oil, and they've got those 'guns.' Massive economic restructuring of America averted! Gotta keep it going though... who's next? |

'the iraq war has been a disaster - one million killed, infrastructure in ruins, chaos and bloodshed on the streets, nd now as a final insult; foreign oil companies are trying to steal iraq's oil wealth. shell and pb are doing pretty well so far: the us and british governments are putting immense pressure on iraq to allow foreign oil companies into the country. the two companies have been actively pushing for a new law that would allow them to control most of iraq's oil reserves, depriving ordinary iraqis of billions of dollars of their nation's wealth. such privitisation of iraq's key natural resource is strenuously opposed by iraqi's trade unions, oil experts and the majority of common iraqi people. as rebel clowns we'd like to 'celebrate' today the successful way shell and bp are threatening the interests of the iraqi people: "everything for 'us'. great! isn't it? to the victor the spoils! if you have another opinion: "it shouldn't be shell and bp, but the iraqi people who should decide the future of iraqi's economy and resources", visit handsoffiraqioil.org and see what you can do!' http photoset here; www.flickr.com |

As I reported before the purpose of the Iraq war was not as claimed by former Halliburton Chairman and VP Cheney the existence or threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction but corporate greed, the greed of big oil to have access to Iraqis Oil Fields. As it turns out the deception may have a new victim: the Dutch Government I am referring to a report that according to the Dutch Newpaper Handelsblad was presented by former Dutch Supreme Court Justice Davids to Dutch Prime Minister Balkenenende. To begin with, critics of the report claim it is a whitewash, manufactured by Prime Minister Balkenende and the Justice Davids controlled commission after years of procrastination to release the truth. In summary, the report states that the Dutch government knew that there never were WMDs, and knew that the invasion violated international law The release of the report started a Europe-wide media uproar. Going Dutch suddenly has serious consequences for the Dutch Government. Though the consequences the United States suffered were even more hurtful, given the thousands of fallen soldiers. |

John Hofmeister is president of Shell Oil Company, the US division of Royal Dutch Shell. Shell reported global earnings of $27.6 billion last year and is the second largest public oil company in the world. He`s also been highly vocal about the environment. He`s proclaimed his support for the global warming argument and called for the US government to place caps on CO2 emissions. He also advocates increased drilling on US territories in order to relax our dependence on OPEC and foreign supply. Visit charlierose.com to see the full interview |
