Amsterdam/The Hague, 15 May 2007 -- Demonstrators from Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands) dressed up as accountants passed out their cards to shareholders at the entrance of the Shell shareholders' meeting. The accountants from the firm 'Thorough & Co' have discovered a number of unpaid environmental bills in Shell's annual accounts. Milieudefensie demands that Shell spend a portion of its more than 25 billion profit in 2006 to limit environmental damage in places such as Nigeria. Costs for cleaning up the environmental damage in Nigeria alone have been estimates at billions of dollars |

BOYCOTT SHELL - FREE NIGERIA www.protectthehuman.com Shell Nigeria is one of the largest oil producers in the Royal Dutch/Shell Group. 80% of the oil extraction in Nigeria is in the Niger Delta, the southeast region of the country. The Delta is home to many small minority ethnic groups, including the Ogoni, all of which suffer egregious exploitation by multinational oil companies, like Shell. Shell provides over 50% of the income keeping the Nigerian dictatorship in power. Although oil from Ogoniland has provided approximately $30 billion to the economy of Nigeria, the people of Ogoni see little to nothing from their contribution to Shell's pocketbook. Shell has done next to nothing to help Ogoni. By 1996, Shell employed only 88 Ogoni (0.0002% of the Ogoni population, and only 2% of Shell's employees in Nigeria). Ogoni villages have no clean water, electricity, abysmal health care, no jobs for displaced farmers and fisher persons and face the effects of unrestrained environmental molestation by Shell everyday. Since Shell began drilling oil in Ogoniland in 1958, the people of Ogoniland have had pipelines built across their farmlands and in front of their homes, suffered endemic oil leaks from these very pipelines, been forced to live with the constant flaring of gas. This environmental assault has smothered land with oil, killed masses of fish and other aquatic life, and introduced devastating acid rain to the land of the Ogoni. For the Ogoni, a people dependent upon ... |

November 20, 2009 www.amazon.com Watch the full interview: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com In the 1990s tensions arose between the native Ogoni people of the Niger Delta and Shell. The concerns of the locals were that very little of the money earned from oil on their land was getting to the people who live there, and the environmental damages caused by Shell's practices. In 1993 the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) organised large protests against Shell and the government, often occupying the refineries. Shell withdrew its operations from the Ogoni areas. The Nigerian government raided their villages and arrested some of the protest leaders. Some of these arrested protesters, Ken Saro-Wiwa being the most prominent, were later executed, against widespread international opposition from the Commonwealth of Nations and human rights organisations. Shell maintained that it asked the Nigerian government for clemency towards those found guilty but that its request was refused. A 2001 Greenpeace report claimed that "two witnesses that accused them later admitted that Shell and the military had bribed them with promises of money and jobs at Shell. Shell admitted having given money to the Nigerian military..." Shell denied these accusations and claimed that MOSOP was an extortionary movement that advocated violence and secession. In December 2003, Shell Nigeria acknowledged that the conflict in the Niger Delta makes it difficult to operate safely and with integrity ... |

According to a leading human rights group, the Shell Corporation has been covering up catastrophic oil spills in the Niger Delta by blaming them on sabotage by local people. Amnesty International says those living there are suffering a "human rights tragedy" inflicted by decades of environmental damage caused in large part by Royal Dutch Shell. Independent auditors estimate that up to 13 million barrels of oil have been spilled in the Delta, an amount equivalent to an Exxon Valdez disaster every year for 40 years. Nigeria's own watchdog reports that there are 2000 current spills, the majority of them from Shell operations. |

The multinational corporation Shell financed, armed, and otherwise colluded with the Nigerian military forces that used deadly force and conducted massive, brutal raids against the Ogoni people of the Niger Delta. Shell was also involved in a strategy that resulted in the executions of nine Ogoni leaders who were working for environmental justice and human rights, including internationally-acclaimed writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. The Center for Constitutional Rights, EarthRights International and other human rights attorneys sued Shell for their role in the repression of the Ogoni and the executions of the "Ogoni Nine". The case was settled before a trial could begin. As part of the settlement Shell will be paying out $15.5 million to the plaintiffs.
