Complete video at: fora.tv Dr. Mark Diesendorf argues that while he hopes to see carbon capture technology available eventually, it currently isn't a practical solution. He adds that in addition to being impractical, it serves to siphon funds away from other, more viable, energy solutions. ----- This program of The World Bank's Praxis Discussion series focuses on the role of energy in international development. Experts discuss the best policies for implementing renewable energy systems, and explore how a clean, reliable source of energy can do more than just light a home. Mark Diesendorf teaches Environmental Studies at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He was formerly Professor of Environmental Science at the University of Technology, Sydney and a principal research scientist with CSIRO where he was involved in early research on integrating wind power into electricity grids. Diesendorf currently serves on the editorial boards of several international scholarly journals. His most recent book is Greenhouse Solutions with Sustainable Energy. |

The US Department of Energy is researching the safe implementation of a technology called carbon sequestration, also known as carbon capture and storage, or CCS. Based on an oilfield practice, this approach stores carbon dioxide, or CO2 generated from human activities for millennia as a means to mitigate global climate change. In 2003, the Department of Energys National Energy Technology Laboratory formed seven Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships to assess geologic formations suitable for storage and to determine the best approaches to implement carbon sequestration in each region. This video describes the work of these partnerships. |

How do we store CO2 safely and permanently underground? By exploiting the same trapping mechanisms used by nature to store CO2, gas and oil for millions of years; and by using existing technology to transport and inject the CO2. This technology has already been used for over 30 years by the oil industry to improve oil extraction. Storage starts by pumping liquid CO2 into a carefully chosen reservoir. There are two main types: deep saline aquifers (which contain undrinkable salt water) and depleted oil and gas fields. Both have the same key geological features for storing CO2 safely and are usually sandstone or limestone. www.atticusdigital.com Atticus Digital's 3D animation video for the Global CCS Institute about carbon capture & storage (CCS) was shown at the 2009 G8 summit. This Cardiff-based business, world leader in CCS 3D animation, won this prestigious global contract after visiting Australia as part of a Welsh Assembly Government trade mission. Commissioned by the Australian government-funded Global CCS Institute (GCCSI), this three minute video explains the importance of carbon capture & storage technology and Australias pioneering role in its development. It was used by Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, in his address to the G8 Summit on 9th July 2009. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said Australia has taken the lead in the understanding of CCS and has potential to make significant cuts in Carbon Dioxide levels. The climate change message needs to be shared with audiences worldwide and the G8 Summit provides the perfect launch platform. We are delighted to have partnered with a world-leading animation specialist to help us tell the carbon capture story in an engaging and imaginative way. After its debut at the G8 Summit, the video will be live online at www.globalccsinstitute.com Martin McCabe, digital director at Atticus Digital said: Demonstrating climate change solutions and bringing the carbon capture technology story to life is an area where we have considerable expertise and winning the contract to produce a video for the Australian Prime Minister is a huge coup that will ... |

With fossil fuels accounting for 60% of power generation by 2030, the third approach to address the climate change challenge is the application of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies. Alstom is focussing on to two main categories of CCS, Oxy Combustion and Post Combustion Capture. These technologies can be retrofitted to the installed base - an essential component to meeting future emission targets. tinyurl.com |

Global warming is one of the biggest issues of our time, the European Commission says in its description of this video report. To meet the targets set for reducing CO2 emissions, it's widely accepted that new technology will play an important role sometimes as a "bridging technology"- while alternative sustainable energy sources are being developed. One of the most promising technologies is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). This a means of capturing CO2 from sources such as power plants, compressing the CO2 and storing it away safely in geological formations underground or under the seabed instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. The video report shows: A CCS project under construction at a lignite power plant run by the energy company Vattenfall at Schwarze Pumpe, south of Berlin, An EU backed carbon storage project at Ketzin in Germany, A North Sea oil field run by the Norwegian company Statoil which was the first place in the world to begin CCS on a commercial basis, How both the EU and the US are working hard to develop the Carbon Capture and Storage technology. Interviews with key figures including: Staffan Görtz, Vattenfall Professor Frank Schilling GFZ National Research Centre for Geo-Sciences Matti Vainio, Energy & Environment Unit, DG Environment, European Commission Boyden Gray, US Ambassador to the EU Arve Thorvik Statoil, Statoil Sleipner West gas rig |

The release of CO2 into the atmosphere is one of the biggest problems facing the environment. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) from Alstom is a safe and permanent method of neutralising the risk of CO2 emissions. This video explains the rationale behind the worlds first carbon capture plant. CCS plants, in operation across Europe and the US since 2008, are a huge achievement in this field, demonstrating Alstoms commitment to clean power solutions. |

John Prescott commenting on today's announcement by Energy and Climate Change Minister Ed Miliband on upto four new Carbon Capture Storage plants. A future that curbs emissions from new coal fired power stations, and will see the UK lead the world in the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, was proposed by Ed Miliband today. Setting the UK at the forefront of the global race to decarbonise fossil fuels, he set out to Parliament proposals for the basis on which coal fired power which will be permitted in the future: * No new coal without CCS demonstration from day one. Alongside the Government's ongoing competition to build a post-combustion demonstrator, up to three further projects including pre-combustion technology, will be funded by a new levy mechanism. * Full scale retrofit of CCS within five years of the technology being independently judged as technically and commercially proven. We envisage an important role for the Environment Agency in making an independent judgement of when the standard is met. The Government will also seek views on whether it is possible to implement these conditions through an emissions performance standard. These proposals form part of a consultation that will be released in the summer, alongside an environmental report. They will place the UK firmly at the forefront of developing CCS technology to commercial deployment, opening up a new advanced green manufacturing industry and aiding the global effort to fight ... |
