Future uncertain for gulf deepwater drilling projects

Los Angeles Times Sunday, August 22, 2010 Higher costs and tighter regulations may make it difficult for energy companies to own and operate deepwater offshore drilling platforms. Not long ago, federal officials were hailing the Gulf of Mexico as America's best source of future crude oil and natural gas. European Parliament urges Russia to leave Georgia European Parliament today adopted a resolution calling on Russia to "honor all its commitments" to withdraw its troops from Georgia in accordance with the six-point, French-brokered ceasefire agreement. The resolution, adopted with 549 votes in favor and 68 against, also "strongly" condemned Russia's recognition of the independence of the two Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. For its part, the US, which has also condemned Moscow for its actions in Georgia, has sent Vice President Dick Cheney to the region in a show of support for Georgia and other Soviet states, including Azerbaijan and Ukraine. Moscow today said it would wait to see how Cheney assesses the situation on the ground, but accused Washington of provoking instability in the region by encouraging Georgia to restore its military capabilities. UN human rights office concerned at rising Iran executions The United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights office voiced concern on Tuesday at a recent rise in executions in Iran and implored the Islamic Republic to stay death sentences handed down for all convicts accused of committing crimes as minors. This was the first commercially significant find in the Middle East. On 14 April 1909, the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC) was incorporated as a subsidiary of Burmah Oil Company to exploit this. In 1935, it became the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC). After World War II, AIOC and the Iranian government initially resisted nationalist pressure to revise AIOC's concession terms still further in Iran's favour. But in March 1951, the pro-western Prime Minister Ali Razmara was assassinated. The Majlis of Iran (parliament) elected a nationalist, Mohammed Mossadeq, as prime minister. In April, the Majlis nationalised the oil industry by unanimous vote. The National Iranian Oil Company was formed as a result, displacing the AIOC. The AIOC withdrew its management from Iran, and organised an effective boycott of Iranian oil. The British government - which owned the AIOC - contested the nationalisation at the International Court of Justice at The Hague, but its complaint was dismissed. President Barack Obama unveiled plans on Wednesday for a limited expansion of US offshore oil and gas drilling in an effort to win Republican support for new proposals to fight climate change. Opening up parts of the US Atlantic coast, Alaska and possibly offshore Florida to exploration is Obama's latest effort to woo legislators needed to pass a climate bill before mid-term elections in November. Some senior Republicans in Congress called the drilling announcement a step in the right direction but said Obama did not go far enough. Environmental groups and some congressional liberals condemned the plan for endangering wildlife and coastal areas merely to give oil companies more profits. Obama, who needs bipartisan support to pass a bill that would set limits on US greenhouse gas emissions, cautioned that expanding drilling was not a catch-all answer to US energy challenges. "Drilling alone can't come close to meeting our long-term energy needs, and for the sake of our planet and our energy independence, we need to begin the transition to cleaner fuels now," Obama said at Andrews Air Force Base in nearby Maryland. "I know that we can come together to pass comprehensive energy and climate legislation that's going to foster new energy -- new industries, create millions of new jobs, protect our planet, and help us become more energy independent." Obama has made energy security and reducing US reliance on foreign oil a key policy goal, and Republican support for drilling ...

Less than a month after declaring polar bears a threatened species because of global warming, the Bush administration is giving oil companies permission to annoy and potentially harm them in the pursuit of oil and natural gas. The Fish and Wildlife Service issued regulations this week providing legal protection to seven oil companies planning to search for oil and gas in the Chukchi Sea off the northwestern coast of Alaska if "small numbers" of polar bears or Pacific walruses are incidentally harmed by their activities over the next five years. Environmentalists said the new regulations give oil companies a blank check to harass the polar bear. About 2000 of the 25000 polar bears in the Arctic live in and around the Chukchi Sea, where the government in February auctioned off oil leases to ConocoPhillips Co., Shell Oil Co. and five other companies for $2.6 billion. Over objections from environmentalists and members of Congress, the sale occurred before the bear was classified as threatened in May. Polar bears are naturally curious creatures and sensitive to changes in their environment. Vibrations, noises, unusual scents and the presence of industrial equipment can disrupt their quest for prey and their efforts to raise their young in snow dens. ----- The polar bear can't wait for Obama to be president, impeach bush now !!

Alaska beats Sta. Lucia to keep semis bid alive 20 Jun 2010 Alaska Aces kept alive, its bid for a playoff for the 2nd automatic semifinal spot after scoring a 103-95 come-from-behind win Sunday night over the Sta. Lucia Realtors at the KFC-PBA Fiesta Cup at the Araneta Coliseum. The Aces trailed by as much as 20 points midway in the second quarter, but showed resiliency and stole the game from the gritty Realtors, who hit 11 3-pointers in the first half to seize control of the contest. "We were shell shocked with the bombs they threw on us. We were shocked with awe out there," said Alaska head coach Tim Cone. "But give the guys credit. They just keep on playing beyond it and we just hoped they start missing some of those shots and they did in the second half," he added. The win gave Alaska an 11-6 mark, just half a game from B-MEG Derby Ace (11-5), and a full game down of the current number 2 San Miguel Beer (12-5). "It's not in our control. What's in our control is our game against San Miguel. We tie them with a win but we can't control B-MEG," said Cone. The Llamados have Barangay Ginebra and Barako Coffee in their schedule and a split, coupled with Alaska's win over the Beermen will create a 3-way tie for the No. 2 spot. In that case, the Aces and San Miguel meet in the playoff match for the bonus due to superior quotients, while relegating to Llamados in the quarterfinal round. Alaska import Diamon Simpson led Alaska with 32 points, while Cyrus Baguio added 23, with ...
