When you look at what's happening in the Gulf of Mexico right now, it's hard to imagine that the Obama administration would allow more drilling in our coastal waters. And yet that is exactly what they are doing in the Arctic, where Ken Salazar has made it clear that he will help companies like Shell and even BP to attain leases to drill in shallow water. And if environmental scientists are correct, this could lead to an even bigger disaster than the one unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. talks about BP's Next Disaster with Rolling Stone political correspondent Tim Dickinson. |

Shell Given OK to Drill Oil Exploration Wells Near Arctic The Interior Department has given Shell the OK to drill oil exploration wells in two areas of the Beaufort Sea near the Arctic. This could lead to the first drilling in more than a decade in this area off the north coast of Alaska. Chuck Clusen of the Natural Resources Defense Council criticized the decision. Clusen said a drilling blowout could leave oil in the waters off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for decades, killing whales, seals, fish and birds and turning irreplaceable spawning and feeding grounds into an ecological wasteland. |

Oil Spill in Persian Mexican Gulf (Formerly Known as Gulf of Mexico),, Iran is Not worried Gulf oil spill: similar disaster could occur in Arctic later this year The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has heightened fears of a similar disaster occurring off America's Arctic coast, where Shell is due to begin exploratory drilling later this year. President Barack Obama has ordered a review of the Anglo-Dutch firms plan's to drill off the coast of Alaska. Activists have claimed that the remote nature of the proposed drilling site, sub-zero temperatures and gale-force winds would be formidable obstacles to any potential clean-up operation. The Alaska Wilderness League said in a statement that it would be almost impossible to mount the kind of clean-up witnessed in the Gulf of Mexico, describing the Arctic as one of the "most remote and extreme environments on Earth". Meanwhile, in the Gulf of Mexico, there was no end in sight for the massive clean-up operation, as BP officials said on Sunday that one of their efforts to slow the leak was not working as effectively as it had initially. A mile-long tube inserted into the leaking well siphoned some 57120 gallons of oil within the past 24 hours, a sharp drop from the 92400 gallons of oil a day that the device was sucking up on Friday, according to John Curry, a BP spokesman. However, the company has said the amount of oil siphoned was likely to vary from day to day. Over the weekend Mr Obama created a commission to examine what ... |

Sarah Palin, former Governor of Alaska and 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee, supports drilling. She has said "Of the 20 million acres (81000 km2) up there, we're looking at 2000 acres (8.1 km2) as a footprint, smaller than LAX (Los Angeles International Airport). With new technology, with directional drilling, maybe that footprint [will] shrink even more."[30] Arctic Power, a lobbying group which supports drilling in ANWR, points out that while ANWR is over 19000000 acres (77000 km2), only 1500000 acres (6100 km2), or 8% of the total, would be available for exploration. In addition, less than 2000 acres (8.1 km2), would be occupied by drilling platforms.[31] American citizens get high prices while BP and Shell make billions, Sarah Palin PAID!!!! President Barack Obama opposes drilling in the Arctic Refuge.[36] In a League of Conservation Voters questionnaire, Obama said, "I strongly reject drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge because it would irreversibly damage a protected national wildlife refuge without creating sufficient oil supplies to meaningfully affect the global market price or have a discernible impact on US energy security." LIAR!!! He is manipulating the supply. Senator John McCain, while running for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, said, "As far as ANWR is concerned, I don't want to drill in the Grand Canyon, and I don't want to drill in the Everglades. This is one of the most pristine and beautiful parts of the world."[37 ... |

The worst offshore oil spill in US history seems worlds away in the Gulf of Mexico, but a dozen abandoned exploratory wells off the coast of Oceanside recall an era when California was a hub of offshore drilling. Marcellus Shale drilling is still in its infancy in West Virginia, but the industry is already contributing millions of dollars to the state's economy. The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the US increased by 35 this week to 1640. |

Robert aims to stop Shell from drilling, especially now that there is graphic proof of the difficulties of cleaning up an oil spill in much better weather and ocean conditions than in the Arctic. There is always the chance of a mishap, and that should be enough for oil companies to forgo drilling in the Arctic. |

President Barack Obama unveiled plans on Wednesday for a limited expansion of US offshore oil and gas drilling in an effort to win Republican support for new proposals to fight climate change. Opening up parts of the US Atlantic coast, Alaska and possibly offshore Florida to exploration is Obama's latest effort to woo legislators needed to pass a climate bill before mid-term elections in November. Some senior Republicans in Congress called the drilling announcement a step in the right direction but said Obama did not go far enough. Environmental groups and some congressional liberals condemned the plan for endangering wildlife and coastal areas merely to give oil companies more profits. Obama, who needs bipartisan support to pass a bill that would set limits on US greenhouse gas emissions, cautioned that expanding drilling was not a catch-all answer to US energy challenges. "Drilling alone can't come close to meeting our long-term energy needs, and for the sake of our planet and our energy independence, we need to begin the transition to cleaner fuels now," Obama said at Andrews Air Force Base in nearby Maryland. "I know that we can come together to pass comprehensive energy and climate legislation that's going to foster new energy -- new industries, create millions of new jobs, protect our planet, and help us become more energy independent." Obama has made energy security and reducing US reliance on foreign oil a key policy goal, and Republican support for drilling ... |
